Blue Moon’s New Artist Series

One nice thing about being an artist is that many of my meetings are in casual or hip settings.  For example, there’s a group of artists I’ve recently joined, we meet each week at this quiet dive bar in Southside to work on a book project. Everyone comes with their materials and we all show what we’ve accomplished over the week. Since it’s a bar, of course we enjoy drinks while sharing career advice. During the first meeting, I noticed a piece of colorful artwork on my beer bottle label and discovered something that made me a little nostalgic:

Artwork By Caleb Morris, for Blue Moon Brewing Company.

You see, several years ago I did my first oil painting. Compared to what I can do now it’s not even that great, but Molson Coors liked it enough to purchase it for their art gallery and use the piece for their advertising:

Working on “La Luna Azul” fueled my passion for creating, and that project was really the one that started my adventures in developing symbolic work with a popular slant. This was also the first piece I ever sold, which gave me the confidence boost I needed to pursue an art career. I always hoped Blue Moon would do another artist series for their brand, seeing these labels made me happy that they’re continuing the tradition and I hope the artists in this series will enjoy great success from the experience. This series is pretty strong, here are a few more pieces in case anyone’s curious:

Pamela’s Diner, Art, and Work/Life Balance.

J and I have one thing in common – we’re both workaholics. After the 9-5 grind my weekends are consumed by art, shows and related business tasks. It’s been this way for years and I’m not gonna lie, it’s an exhausting routine. However, we have a new tradition to ring in the weekend – before heading out to work, we have brunch together. It’s nice because it gives us a chance to reconnect and face our respective workdays in a positive light. Our last two brunches have been at Pamela’s Diner, and I must say that it’s pretty groovy place with good diner fare. Besides the food, I really like the art and decor there. Here are a few of my favorite pieces from Pamela’s collection:

20150905_114423

Wall painting of John Lennon

20150905_114116

Comic-style decorative art near the restaurant entrance.

20150905_114139

Another large wall painting of Janis Joplin.

I would’ve liked to get more, but this place is a hotspot in Oakland so it’s pretty crowded.

After brunch I felt ready to seize the day. Today’s tasks included working on the new site and related business tasks, as well as another art show project that I was invited to. More on that later. Here’s a snap from my Moleskine, it’s a sketch of one of the pieces that may be included:

More on that one later ;).

Largely self-taught as an artist, Vassar's philosophy of balancing style and substance has attracted a diverse audience to her work. Using figures as the primary subjects, she weaves symbolism and surrealism throughout her art, creating images that are personal yet open to interpretation.
